OVERALL TAKEAWAY: A sophisticated showing from a preternaturally talented young designer.

He’s only been around a handful of seasons, but the seemingly endless line that snaked through Pier 59 studios to Wes Gordon’s Fall 2012 presentation indicated that this young designer is worth watching.

His contemporaries in the industry may prefer grunge, sporty, or retro styles depending on the season, but Gordon can be counted on for something more sophisticated (no doubt an aesthetic honed from time spent working with the likes of Oscar de la Renta and Tom Ford)—and he didn’t disappoint for Fall.

Gordon’s impeccably tailored jackets, high-waisted trousers, silky blouses, and cocktail-ready dresses took a romantic turn for the season, in rich colors like emerald and oxblood and with dreamy details like plush fox stoles and metallic embroidery. But though there were plenty of pieces sure to be snapped up by Saks-browsing ladies who lunch, he also incorporated a healthy does of youthfulness—see the gold leopard-print jacquard and short in the front, long in the back hemlines on his evening offerings.

Where other emerging designers might falter is in trying to do too much—and getting lost long with way. With Gordon, it’s impressive to see such a strong sense of identity in a line so young.
