OVERALL TAKEAWAY: Surprising details made the Thakoon Fall 2012 collection a joy to see—and we expect it will be even more fun to wear.
Last season, Thakoon Panichgul’s collection was, quite literally, all over the map: India, by way of the Wild West. This season, the designer sent out a significantly more restrained collection—to great effect.
Panichgul’s silhouettes were at first glance rather conservative, with shift dresses, paperbag-waist skirts, and trenches. But unexpected touches, like a cutout at the trench's neck for a subtle but sexy slash of skin or a purple leopard print collar on a heather gray stadium coat, were perfectly placed and used sparingly enough to keep things looking precise and sophisticated.
Texture and color were also fun to see here: A basketweave leather overlay on a duchesse satin shift was a great touch, and his bright mixings of hot pink and red were refined but still plenty fun.
There were touches of classic Thakoon whimsy, like tomato-red wool trousers with embroidered peacock feathers and furry Mongolian wool sweaters, but in all, it was much less heavy-handed than last season. Easy to wear, but far from boring? We’ll take one of everything, please.
