OVERALL TAKEAWAY: We grow older, but some of us never grow up—and what girl doesn’t love a good dress-up session?
Over-the-top glamour has always been the name of Oscar de la Renta’s game, but for Fall 2012, he outdid even himself. If there was a touch of the bohemian in last season’s collection, this season he went for pure, unadulterated fantasy fashion.
He started with the one thing every good girly-girl has in their dress-up box: costume jewelry. Yes, he literally bedecked every girl in sparkling dangling earrings and diamante headbands, but he also used the motif in prints, with brooches and earrings printed on silk chiffon, wool crepe or silk failles. Other pieces had pearls and crystals dangling from them.
Underneath all the adornment were some great day options, like tweed skirt suits often printed with lace, fox-trimmed coats, and a nylon goose down vest printed to look like tweed.
But it was the princess-worthy evening looks where de la Renta really let loose (we saw more than a few Oscars-worthy options), offering a cotton candy-esque voluminous pink gown, a rich turquoise floral applique crushed pleated silk velvet gown, and various gowns with crystals, feathers, paillettes, beads, lace edges, and fur fringes. Yes, it was a lot—but it was also impossible to resist the impulse to stop taking things to seriously and indulge in the gorgeousness.
