OVERALL TAKEAWAY: Donatella streamlines the Versace signature for 2011.
Donatella Versace opted to show her latest Fall 2011 womenswear collection inside the house that Gianni built––or rather, that he lived in, eschewing Teatro Versace for the Palazzo in Via Gesu where her brother lived and worked. Don't imagine that meant scrimping at any level, however––there was still all the glitz and glamour you'd expect at Casa Versace, with Duran Duran in the front row, Prince on the soundtrack and a Medusa-head stamped large across the head of the catwalk.
That Medusa popped up on the clothes too, stamped into saucer-sized gilt buttons or metal plates clasping wide belts closed. Maybe she was the inspiration behind the coils of python that meandered their way through tight little dresses, although those also had a distinct link to what Versace consultant Christopher Kane showed in London on Monday.
It seemed to be a reinvention of the codes of the house, a task Donatella began with the Greek key motif last season. This time it was the early nineties Versace we saw, played out in boxy little suits, military coats and shift dresses, a few patterned across the surface with giant appliqué motifs derived from blown-up Versace scarf prints. Those were peppy, colorful and, for many, just a little bit too much. Business as usual at Versace, then.
