Derek Lam with his 16-piece eBay dress collection
Derek Lam is currently dipping his toe into the waters of gentler-priced fashion with a capsule collection for eBay, but it seems the temperature’s fine: The designer is at work on a diffusion line, which will reportedly launch later this year.
Details are few for now—a Lam representative told FashionEtc the company is not releasing any further information at this time—but Women’s Wear Daily reports that the line is coming at the perfect time, as a new customer base of would-be Derek Lam shoppers is exposed to the eBay collection.
Derek Lam for eBay began as a collection of 16 dresses, from a floor-length floral dress to cotton poplin sundresses. During New York Fashion Week, the lineup was revealed online, where browsers could vote for their favorites; the top five dresses will be available on eBay May 10 (pre-orders start April 11).
This diffusion line will benefit from the eBay project because, as part of the voting process, people gave their e-mail addresses—and now Lam and his business partner and CEO Jan-Hendrik Schlottmann have over 20,000 contacts for potential customers. (Talk about knowing your audience!)
According to WWD, sample making for the diffusion line is under way, but there’s no word yet on price range (Lam’s main line ranges from about $600 for a simple blouse too $3,000 for floor-length chiffon dresses) or retail outlets.
