Advanced Style’s Nowness Video Shows Senior Street Style
Bring on the silver foxes!
Photographer Ari Seth Cohen of the senior citizen street-style blog Advanced Style has rounded up his favorite gray-haired glamazons for a new film (watch the trailer above) directed by Lina Plioplyte.
Débuting in full March 23 on Nowness, the inspiring short features stylish seniors like fashion icon Iris Apfel, shop owner Lynn Dell, artist Ilona Royce Smithkin, and writer Alice Carey as they share their style obsessions, including dyed-to-match cashmere sweaters and skirts, men's suits jazzed up with an ornate brooch, Japanese kimonos, "giant Joan Crawford shoulders," and, of course, Rodarte.
"The film is inspired by stylish older ladies and the stories they tell," Cohen tells FashionEtc. "Lina and I want to give a voice to older women and show that personal style advances with age."
There's no better proof than this colorful bunch, who sport mile-long fake lashes, stacks of bangles, and designer dresses as they ruminate about what fashion means to them.
"I think it's fun to dress up," Apfel says in the film. "It's an exercise in creativity and it makes you feel better. Sometimes you're in a funk and you put something on and twirl yourself around and — bam! ... Too many people are so afraid and they do whatever everybody else does and look like everybody else."
"You get treated nicer if you're well dressed," adds Mary, wearing a bold pair of leopard-print glasses. "I don't want to go around like a dreary old lady."
And what words of wisdom do these gals have for the younger generations?
"Young women, you're going to be an old woman some day," says Jean of the Idiosyncratic Fashionistas. "Don't worry about it. Don't sweat it ... It builds character."
