3-D Bikinis Come to Life
Calm down, boys—the 3-D bikini isn't as titillating as it sounds.
But that's not to say it's not pretty darn mind-boggling. Designed by Jenna Fizel and Mary Huang of the forward-thinking Continuum Fashion in partnership with Shapeways, the N12 two-piece is being billed as "the world's first ready-to-wear, completely 3-D printed article of clothing." Top that, James Cameron!
Short for Nylon 12, the N12 number (in white or black) was created sans a single stitch. A 3-D printing process formed a flexible yet sturdy nylon material; tiny circular plates are held together by tiny strings for a design that moves with the curves of the body.
And if you can wrap your head around the fact that the bikini came out of a printer, try to comprehend this: It's even waterproof.
Comprised of multiple pieces that snap together, the sexy suit can be yours without having to bust into some top-secret lab. The bikini is available online in classic white, with prices ranging from $250 to $300 for the top, and $200 for a belted bottom or $350 for a circle-embellished bottom.
Of course, if you really want to make a splash, splurge on the bespoke version (offered in your exact dimensions and choice of color) for $1,500. Oh, go on then.
