Rachel Zoe’s pregnancy prevented her from showing on the official Fashion Week schedule last season, but for Spring 2012, we got to see the fruits of the stylist-turned-designer's labor.
“It’s really scary and really exciting,” Zoe told FashionEtc about joining the ranks of New York’s finest—among them Diane von Furstenberg and Victoria Beckham, whose shows Zoe has already taken in this week.
She had no reason to worry; a network of high-profile fashion folk (from editors at Elle and Style.com to buyers from Neiman Marcus and Net-a-Porter) was there to lend their support. The only thing missing were the Bravo cameras—really!
As for the clothes? “It’s pretty much like if you pictured Brigitte Bardot in the South of France [in the] late ‘60s, early ‘70s, running around being glamorous,” Zoe said. “That’s what was in my head.”
Translation: jumpsuits in olive twill or royal blue georgette, floaty palazzo pants, and ruffled little dresses as well as after-dark go-tos like a tonal zebra shift dress or slouchy tee-and-maxi skirt combo in a ruby red textured devore.
Of course, there were also RZ-approved staples like pussybow blouses, sharp tailored separates, and blazers, and floaty, ‘70s-style dresses—but Zoe insists she’s not just designing for herself or an army of Zoe look-alikes. (At the recollection of that mid-aughts phenomenon dubbed “Zoebots” by the press, the stylist-turned-designer literally cringed.)
“For sure, I never want to design anything I wouldn’t wear myself. I gotta love it,” she said. “But I don’t think any of these girls look anything like me. I want these girls to be cool and effortless and glamorous. I kind of wish I was that cool and effortless and glamorous!”
