The long and the short of it: Mullet hems at Marchesa, Jason Wu, and Vera Wang
There's the poodle, the pouf, and the pencil. And we can now officially add the mullet skirt to the dictionary.
This short in the front, long in the back hemline has been popping up on runways for a few seasons now. Ladies, it looks like it's here to stay. But can someone come up with a better name?
For those with a heavily black-tie social calendar, these silhouettes will be as ubiquitous this season as Billy Ray Cyrus's hairstyle in the early '90s.
Jason Wu's and Oscar de la Renta's skirts came in the form of voluminous ball gowns in bright colors. Wu’s oversize ruffles hit at mid-shin but ended in the back in a full train, while de la Renta’s versions were gathered up at the front—both are perfect for showing off statement shoes.
Similarly, Vera Wang showed some looks with a long, floaty cutaway skirt, though hers were truly mini up front, and Marchesa’s ornate take also showed more than a little leg. Trickier to wear, yes, but if they do land on the red carpet (which we fully expect), they're sure to make major impact.
Not all the hems showed up on evening-only looks, though. DKNY showed a loose, flowing white tank dress with a mini front hem and a train trailing behind. Brunch outfit? You bet!
Unlike their namesake (really, help us find a new term for them, please), which are party in the back, business in the front, these skirts can be worn anywhere, anytime. And all you need to rock them is a killer attitude.
