Spring 2012 Trend: Chic Caftans

Spring 2012 was all about movement and freedom. No more constricting fabrics cutting off circulation. No more saying swearing off steak. Designers have heard our cries—they sent out loose dress after loose dress this Fashion Week. Consider this the season of the chic caftan (and long tunic!), where the old, flowing robe has more definition, more style, and far more personality.
Tommy Hilfiger, of all people, sent out not one but four loosey-goosey dresses, but his final two looks were the masterpieces. Cut high on the neck and color blocked (another major trend this season), these can be worn almost anywhere. DKNY's versions came in the form of shirt dresses, from a sheer white to a bold red. They hung off the frame while still showing off curves. And most importantly, wearing these will give you good leg.
Naeem Khan glammed up the traditional caftan, adding sequined stripes to a navy dress with a slight keyhole neck. Zero + Maria Cornejo's draped dresses ranged from sunshine yellow to color blocked black, white, and blue, and hit just above the knee. Even Phillip Lim sent out a version, though in typical Lim fashion, the front and back were held together by barely-there straps. Who said the caftan can't get an update?
But wait, there's more! Oscar de la Renta got in on the action with a gold knit dress that was more form-fitting than those of his fellow designers. And for you animal-print lovers, Michael Kors sent out a leopard-print caftan with a deep V-neck. Narciso Rodriguez's dress had an asymmetrical hemline and pops of subtle color.
So whether you're relaxing on the beach or going out to dinner, there's no need to button up. Put away those Spanx, ladies, and loosen up.
