Evelyn Lauder Dies at 75
Evelyn Lauder, the wife of Estée Lauder chairman Leonard Lauder and a passionate advocate of breast cancer research, has passed away at the age of 75 from nongenetic ovarian cancer, the New York Times reports.
A refugee of Nazi-occupied Europe, Lauder's health issues—she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989, and ovarian cancer in 2007—sparked a mission that saw her raising millions for breast cancer awareness.
She also created the Pink Ribbon campaign and founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
At Estée Lauder, she served as senior corporate vice president and head of fragrance development worldwide. She was also outspoken about that other Estée Lauder, her mother-in-law.
“I was very strong,” she has said. “Having had a childhood like the one I had, I was much more tough than a lot of people. I was one of the few people who spoke my mind to Estée.”
