‘Hollywood Costume’ Exhibit to Include ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ and ‘Wizard of Oz’ Dresses
Calling all movie buffs!
The little black dress to end all little black dresses—that would be the Givenchy gown worn by Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s—will be on display in London this fall.
Hollywood Costume, an exhibition of iconic costumes from the last 70 years, will open at the Victoria & Albert Museum on October 20.
Besides the aforementioned Givenchy dress, pieces in the collection will include Scarlett O’Hara’s green “curtain” dress from Gone with the Wind (designed by Walter Plunkett), Dorothy’s blue gingham pinafore from The Wizard of Oz (designed by Adrian), and contemporary pieces like Meryl Streep’s costumes from The Iron Lady.
“This landmark exhibition will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the most beloved characters in Hollywood history and gain insight on the role of the costume designer and their vital contribution to cinema storytelling,” said Deborah Nadoolman Landis, the senior guest curator of the exhibition and a costume designer, in a release.
Roxie Hart’s Chicago ensembles, Kate Winslet’s white Titanic suit, Marilyn Monroe’s sheer white Some Like it Hot cocktail dress, and the stunning green silk charmeuse gown worn by Keira Knightly in Atonement will also be showcased.
(And a little something for the Twi-hards: New Moon costumes will also make an appearance!)
